“The oldest Italian cheese store in America”

What can I say about Alleva? Well, I can’t say enough. I absolutely adore this place. The oldest cheese store in Little Italy, for over 100 years, has served up the highest quality meats and cheeses from fresh ricotta and mozzarella to sopressata and prosciutto. The very moment you walk in you smell the insanely delicious aromas of the meats that line the ceiling and the cheese that’s so cleverly showcased.

They display hand prepped fresh mozzarella, as well as mozzarella in extra virgin olive oil, as soon as you walk through the entrance. That’s a sure way to captivate your customers. The fresh mozzarella has such a firm, yet delicate texture. Definitely the work of some very skilled hands.

And the carefully aged Parmigiano Reggiano was unmistakeably sharp and nutty.  For true cheese lovers, you know there is nothing better than the pleasure of savoring a perfectly aged, fresh-cut sliver of Parmigiano Reggiano.

A lot of cured meats can be excessively salty, but not at Alleva. I tried the sweet and spicy sopressata and found that it was lightly salted and with just the right amount of fat to tie in the overall firm texture of the sausage.

You cannot leave this place without trying the prosciutto rice balls. They are by far one of the best things I’ve ever put in my mouth. These bite size morsels are filled with prosciutto, ricotta, parsley, and mozzarella then breaded and fried until they are golden brown. They’ll usually heat them up for you on the spot so you can eat them while you shop. Trust me they won’t last very long so order a few to go.

All in all, Alleva makes for a great tourist free shop that has retained it’s old-world charm and tradition in Little Italy.  It’s the kind of place, with the kind of people, who will continue to maintain Little Italy’s true heart and soul.
