The Comedy Cellar

Last night me and my girlfriend were walking through Greenwich Village and came across The Comedy Cellar. We were right around the corner from her apartment so it was either watch Netflix and eat Haagen Dazs or watch a great comedy show. That debate didn’t last very long as soon as I saw that Greg Giraldo and Tom Papa were in the line up. You may know Papa from his numerous appearances on “Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “Late Show with David Letterman.” He was also chosen by Jerry Seinfeld as the host of NBC’s “The Marriage Ref”.  Greg Giraldo is a regular at the Comedy Cellar so chances are you will see him as well as Tom Papa, Keith Robinson,Dave Attell, and Jim Norton just to name a few. While we were waiting in line we who got a chance to chat with William Stephenson who is one of the favorite hosts at The Comedy Cellar and a preferred audience warm up comedian. Although he was cracking jokes and teasing me and my girlfriend, I think he grew fond of us in that short amount of time. We happened to be there about a half hour before the show started and luckily we were in the front of the line. I definitely suggest going a little early or you can also reserve a spot prior to the show by visiting their website

The cover charge is about $10-$12 dollars per person and there is also a 2 drink minimum. The drinks are reasonably priced and they have a wide selection of “girlish” cocktails if you are into that sort of thing. The food, however, is average so make sure you aren’t planning to take your date there for dinner first.

The comics love to pick on audience members so if you can’t laugh at yourself then I don’t suggest going. Most of the time it is only the people that sit in the front row that get tormented and it’s usually not that bad. The jokes are mostly racist, sexist, or having to do with sex and each comedian is versatile. Of course some are better than others but I guarantee you will be laughing till it hurts.

If you’re looking for something to do in New York City for cheap then the Comedy Cellar is the way to go. It is definitely worth the money spent to see some of the best comedians doing what they do best. And you never know who will make a surprise appearance.
